topography

The area of the 16.26 km² municipal area includes a section of the Avant-Pays Savoyard , the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Guiers and the Chaîne de l'Épine , the main anticline at the southern end of the French Jura Mountains . The village extends in a hollow in the plateau of the Lac d'Aiguebelette , a few kilometers to the south , between the Chaîne de l'Épine and a plateau that runs in north-south direction and descends about 400 m into the Rhone Valley. On the wooded western slope of the Chaîne de l'Épine, the communal soil extends to an altitude of 1160  m . It is drained by several small brooks, some of which have their source in the municipality and flow through the basin towards Lac d'Aiguebelette. To the south of the village there is a slightly reliefed terrain that extends to its shore, so that part of the lake and two beaches still belong to Novalaise. To the west, the municipality rises again to a height of around 660  m and extends to the edge of the terrain criss-crossed with striking rock walls, below which the village of Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey is located. At this point the terrain level is comparatively low and enables the Col de la Crusille pass connection . The community area is mostly used for agriculture with 42% meadows and 23% other agricultural areas. About 26% is covered by forest, and 3–5% falls on water surfaces and buildings.

Community structure

In addition to the actual, compact town center, Novalaise includes many scattered hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Pétignieux ( 559  m ), Les Granges ( 646  m ), La Rossière ( 628  m ), Les Guillets ( 559  m ) and Les Giffards ( 504  m ) in a panoramic position on the southwest slope of the Chaîne de l'Épine,
  • Le Cordonnier (around 480  m ), Carabin ( 440  m ) and Vaizieux ( 430  m ) as settlement areas in the village center of Novalaise,
  • Monthieux ( 551  m ) and Le Collomb ( 460  m ) in the west between the town center and the Col de La Crusille ,
  • Les Goys ( 441  m ), Les Bottières ( 459  m ), Le Chaney ( 504  m ) and La Crétaz ( 494  m ) in the hilly landscape between Novalaise and Lac d'Aiguebelette,
  • Le Terreau ( 470  m ), Le Neyret d'en haut ( 470  m ) and Sabatel ( 480  m ) on the hills directly above the lake,
  • Les Saint-Bonnet, Le Neyret and Le Gojat (each around 400  m ) on the banks of Lac d'Aiguebelette.

history

The municipality of Novalaise was settled very early. During the Stone Age, there was a pile dwelling settlement on the shores of Lac d'Aiguebelette near Le Gojat . It was explored from 1954 to 1962 (and again in 1971, 1983 and 1998) and classified as a Monument historique . It is not directly part of the list of prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps of the UNESCO World Heritage , but an associated station of the even older site on the list on the south bank. Dendrochronological investigations have felling dates from the short period of 2702 BC. BC to 2699 BC Proven.

In the Middle Ages, the market town of Novalaise, located some distance from the lakeshore, first appeared in documents in 1308, when it was granted the rights to a weekly market. Also in the 14th century it was mentioned as a parish belonging to the diocese of Belley with the spelling Novalesia and Novaleise . The name refers to a newly reclaimed area.

The dominant seat of Montbel was of greater importance in the Middle Ages. Its castle, first mentioned in 1248 as Castrum Montisbelli , dates back to the 11th century. From the almost 700  m high castle on the edge of the terrain above Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey, both the Novalaise plateau and the lower Guiers valley could be controlled. In addition to Novalaise, the possessions of the Lords of Montbel included the Château de l'Épine (near Nances) and the villages of Marcieux, Nances, Saint-Alban-de-Montbel and Ayn. Under the sovereignty of the House of Savoy-Piedmont , they rose to become Marquis , whose territory was divided into two castleanies .

Attractions

The Saint-Jean village church of Novalaise, after several renovations, unites the styles of several eras. Its oldest part is the bell tower that was started in the 14th century. The portal of an entrance door is in the style of the 15th century. The interior decoration includes a votive stone from a Gallo-Roman temple and a pietà from the 17th century.

Remnants of walls have been preserved from the Château de Montbel . It is on the GR 9 hiking trail , which runs along the western edge of the municipality and offers views of the Guiers valley.

Economy and Infrastructure

Novalaise was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today, in addition to some farms still active in the cattle production sector, there are various local small-scale businesses and a small number of medium-sized businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The Lac d'Aiguebelette is also an important destination for camping tourism , of the numerous campsites around the lake there are four on the Novalaise floor.

The village is located at the crossroads of two formerly important thoroughfares, namely the east-west connection (D916) from Chambéry via the Col de l'Épine to Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers and the north-south connection (D921) from Yenne to Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin . Today the A 43 also runs through the municipality with a junction in neighboring Nances. Airports in the region are Chambéry-Savoie (distance 20 km), Lyon-St-Exupéry (75 km) or Geneva (97 km).

education

In Novalaise there is a state-run pre-school ( école maternelle ), two elementary schools ( école primaire , one of which is privately run) and a comprehensive school ( collège ).
