history

The name Saint-Genix refers to either Genesius of Rome or Genesius of Arles , although it is not finally clear which of the two Christian martyrs originally gave the name. Today the latter is designated as the patronage of Saint-Genix.

In the High Middle Ages , the place was first mentioned in 1115 as Apud Sanctum Genesium . Notations used later were Saint-Genys (1481) and Saint-Genis (1691–1731). Under the sovereignty of Savoy-Piedmont and especially since the Treaty of Paris (1355) , the Guiers became a border town between Savoy and the French Dauphiné and Saint-Genix. As such, it was a regular target of attacks and destruction for several centuries, including attacks by the Dauphin , the passage of marauding gangs or, in 1603, a campaign of revenge by the Republic of Geneva .

Until the French Revolution, there was a marquisate in Saint-Genix in personal union with the Lords of Beauregard , to which the neighboring villages of Champagneux and Gresin also belonged. After the French Revolution and the associated temporary renaming in Entre-Rives , the spelling Saint-Genix was established .

From 1793 to 2015 the municipality was the main town (French:  chef-lieu ) of the canton of Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers .

The municipality of Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers was merged with Gresin and Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens on January 1, 2019 to form the Commune nouvelle Saint-Genix-les-Villages. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. It belonged to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and was a member of the Val Guiers community association .

The run-of-river power plant on the bridge over the Guiers is the successor to a system that first went into operation in 1889, of which some historic buildings have been preserved. Saint-Genix is a station on the Via Gebennensis Way of St. James , which leads from Geneva to Le Puy and connects there to Via Podiensis .

A specialty from Saint-Genix is the Gâteau de Saint-Genix , a brioche decorated with red pralines .

The locals of Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers are called San-Genestois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

To this day, Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers is a local center in a rural setting, which is characterized by both agriculture and trade. Agriculture has concentrated in the last few decades on the larger farms, with the total usable area falling slightly due to the strong increase in population and the resulting expansion of the settlement area. There are also various local retail businesses and several medium-sized industrial companies. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.

Bridge over the Guiers

The department road D1516 runs through the village, the former national road N516 from La Tour-du-Pin to Cognin and Yenne , crossing the Guiers in the process. A motorway junction to the A43 named after Saint-Genix connects the municipality directly with Chambéry and Lyon . The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (distance 60 km) and Chambéry-Savoie (32 km).

education

In Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers there is a pre-school ( école maternelle ), two elementary schools ( école primaire ) and a comprehensive school ( collège ).
