geography

location

Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens is located on the western edge of the department at 688  m , about 18 km west of the prefecture of Chambéry , 69 km east-southeast of the city of Lyon and 48 km north of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). topography

The 8.17 km² area of the Commune déléguée covers a section of the Avant-Pays savoyard , the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Rhone and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . The Commune déléguée extends over a ridge that connects to the south of the 877  m high Mont Tournier and drops to about 400  m . In the west, this forms an abruptly sloping terrain step running in north-south direction, the upper edge of which marks the western border of the Commune déléguée. Due to its location on a ridge of porous limestone soil, there are almost no surface running waters within the Commune déléguée. The ground of the Commune déléguée is about half covered by forest, the other half is used for agricultural purposes and consists of fields and meadows.

Community structure

The settlement area of the Commune déléguée Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens is divided into three parts:

  • Le Borgey ( 700  m ) in the north
  • Les Rives ( 692  m ) in the north-west and
  • Beyrin ( 642  m ), the actual town center in the center of the municipality.

There are several more scattered hamlets in the south .

history

Ruins of the Château de Conspectus

The parish named after Saint Mauritius was first mentioned in a document in 1060 at the time of the High Middle Ages . At that time and during the centuries that followed, the associated manor, the Château de Conspectus , served to localize the village in mentions such as Ecclesia Sancti Mauricii sita juxta castrum nomine Conspectum and Saint-Maurice de Conspet . The name addition "de Rotherens" appeared only in the 17th century.

Since the Middle Ages there was a small dominion in Saint-Maurice under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy , which was elevated to marquisate in 1602 and later became the property of the Lords of Beauregard .

The municipality of Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens was merged with Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers and Gresin to form the Commune nouvelle Saint-Genix-les-Villages on January 1, 2019 . Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. It belonged to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and was a member of the Val Guiers community association .

Attractions

Remaining defense tower of the Château de Mauchamp

The Château de Conspectus the foundation walls still get parts from the 11th century. After a fire in the 14th century, it was not rebuilt, and its ruins are now in a wooded area east of the town center. The then lords of Saint-Maurice instead moved the manor to a hill above Gresin and built the Château de Mauchamp there . A defensive tower is still preserved from the medieval building.

Houses in the center of Saint-Maurice, including a wash house ( Lavoir )

The Radio-Musée Galletti is located directly at the mayor's office ( mairie ) . The small museum commemorates Roberto Galletti Di Cadilhac, who set up a radio telegraphy system in Champagneux in 1912 , which was requisitioned by the French army at the beginning of the First World War .

Several hiking trails open up the ridge of Mont Tournier , including the Via Gebennensis Way of St. James , which leads from Geneva to Le Puy and connects there to the Via Podiensis . At several points there is a panorama over the Rhone Valley.
