Gresin is a commune Déléguée in the French commune of Saint-Genix-les-Villages with 363 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

location

Gresin is located on the western edge of the department at 413  m , about 19 km west of the prefecture of Chambéry , 67 km east-southeast of the city of Lyon and 47 km north of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). Neighboring municipalities of Gresin are Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens in the northeast, Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey and Rochefort in the southeast, Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers in the southwest and Champagneux in the northwest.

topography

The area of the 5.01 km 2 area of the Commune déléguée belongs to the Avant-Pays savoyard , the Savoyard foreland, characterized by gentle elevations, between the border river Guiers and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . It comprises a gently rising slope that rises from the valley of the Côte-Envers stream in a north-easterly direction to the foothills of a ridge that borders the Rhone Valley further north . It is on this edge of the terrain that the communal floor in the east reaches its highest point at 730  m . The Côte-Envers marks the southern border of the Commune déléguée and drains the area of the Commune déléguée towards the Rhone. This is mainly used for agriculture, and about 30% of it has forests around the edge of the terrain. Outside the town center there are still some hamlets and farms, including Malbuisson in the north, Les Molasses in the west and Le Pin in the southeast.

history

The place Gresin was first mentioned as a parish around 1241 towards the end of the High Middle Ages ( Parrocchia de Gresino ). Later spellings were Grisinum and Grezin . The name goes back to the Latin Gratianum , which means the estate of a person named Gratius. Under the sovereignty of Savoy-Piedmont and until the French Revolution , the villages of Gresin, Les Molasses and Le Pin belonged to the Marquis of Saint-Genix. The community was called Grésin-Lépin-et-Molasses at the time .

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Gresin merged with Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers and Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens to form the Commune nouvelle Saint-Genix-les-Villages. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. It belonged to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and was a member of the Val Guiers community association .

With 375 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016), Gresin was one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had slowly but steadily declined since Savoy was annexed to France (490 inhabitants were counted in 1861), the trend was reversed in the 1980s to a slight increase in population. The local residents of Gresin are called Grésonard (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Gresin was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition to the few remaining active farms, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Genix to Novalaise . Another road connection exists with the neighboring municipality of Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens. The next motorway connection to the A43 (Lyon – Chambéry) is nine kilometers away at Saint-Genix. The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (distance 67 km) and Chambéry-Savoie (29 km).
