topography

The area of the 10.68 km 2 municipality covers part of the Avant-Pays Savoyard, the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Rhone and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . The municipality consists partly of the flat alluvial soil directly on the banks of the Rhone and the other part of a steep edge running in north-south direction, behind which a plateau between 700  m and 800  m connects. On the upper edge of this steep slope, which forms the eastern boundary of the municipality, the municipality reaches its highest point at 820  m . In the north and west, the municipal boundary runs in the middle of the Rhone, so that water areas make up around 8% of the municipal area. About half of the municipal land is used for agriculture, the rest (38%) is covered by forests.

Community structure

The center of Champagneux, together with the hamlet of Le Center and other farms and settlements, extends along the foot of the steep slope, one to two kilometers away from the Rhone. The hamlet of Leschaux lies in the northern part of the municipality and directly on the banks of the Rhone.

history

The place Champagneux was first mentioned as a parish around 1241 towards the end of the High Middle Ages (Parrocchia de Champagniaco). A later spelling was Champaignieu. The name goes back to a Gallo-Roman clan name, from which numerous places in eastern France are derived. Under the sovereignty of Savoy-Piedmont and until the French Revolution , the lands of Champagneux belonged to the Marquis of Saint-Genix.

With 688 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Champagneux is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had steadily declined since the annexation of Savoy to France (711 inhabitants were counted in 1861), the trend was reversed in the 1990s in favor of an increase in population. The locals of Champagneux are called Champagnieusard (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Champagneux was an agricultural village. In addition to agriculture, which in recent decades has concentrated on a few farms and focused on maize cultivation, there are now various local small-scale businesses. In the meantime, the village has mainly developed into a residential community and is experiencing a significant influx of young families. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.

The D1516 department road runs through the village and leads to the larger neighboring villages of Saint-Genix and Yenne . The next motorway connection to the A43 Lyon – Chambery is eight kilometers away at Saint-Genix. The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (distance 68 km) and Chambéry-Savoie (35 km).
