location

Saint-Béron is located on the western edge of the department at 322  m , about 16 kilometers southwest of the prefecture of Chambéry , 75 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Lyon and 35 kilometers north of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). topography

The area of the municipal area of 8.66 km 2 covers a section of the Avant-Pays savoyard , the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Guiers and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . On the south-eastern edge of the municipality there is a step of about 300 m, which separates the Avant-Pays savoyard from the limestone massif of the Chartreuse and on which the municipality has its highest elevation at 573  m . The terrain level is part of the easternmost mountain range of the Chartreuse and is interspersed several times with vertically rising rock walls. At the southern tip of the municipality, the Guiers penetrates this mountain range in the Gorges de Chailles gorge and then forms the western border of the municipality. Between the mountain range and the Guiers, the municipality consists of rolling hills and is largely used for agriculture. Forests make up about 19% of the area.

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Béron also has several hamlet settlements and farmsteads scattered across the municipality , including Les Bonnes at 292  m on the banks of the Guiers.

history

Overland tram through the Gorges de Chailles

The place Saint-Béron was first mentioned in the High Middle Ages in 1142 and 1146 as a parish and priory ( Ecclesia de Sancto Benigno and Prioratus Sancti Benigni ). The name refers to Benignus of Dijon as a patronage . For about the same time and for several centuries the variant "Beron" was used at the same time ( Prioratus Sancti Beronis 1180).

With the opening of the station on the Saint-André-le-Gaz – Chambéry railway line in 1884, Saint-Béron was connected to the regional railway network. From 1895 to 1936, Saint-Béron was also the terminus of an overland tram that ran through the Gorges de Chailles via Saint-Laurent-du-Pont to Voiron .

The local residents of Saint-Béron are called Saint-Béronnois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Béron was a village dominated by agriculture , and even today some farms are still rearing cattle and growing crops with a slight decline in the usable area. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.

The village is located on the departmental road D1006 and the former national road N6 , which leads from Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin through the Gorges de Chailles to Chambéry. Further road connections exist with the neighboring communities in the Isère department and with La Bridoire. The regional A43 motorway (Lyon – Chambéry) can be reached via a connection 14 km away at Belmont-Tramonet . In the village there is a train station on the little-traveled railway line Saint-André-le-Gaz-Chambéry . The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (distance 69 km) and Chambéry-Savoie (27 km).
