Saint-Laurent-du-Pont is a French municipality with 4531 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Saint-Laurent-du-Point belongs to the Arrondissement of Grenoble and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Chartreuse-Guiers . The inhabitants are called Laurentinois (es) .
geography
Saint-Laurent-du-Pont is located around 18 kilometers north of Grenoble in the plain of the Chartreuse Mountains . The Guiers-Mort flows here ; in the north-western part of the municipality is the Canal de l'Herretang . Saint-Laurent-du-Pont is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Miribel-les-Échelles in the north, Entre-deux-Guiers in the north and northeast, Saint-Christophe-sur-Guiers in the east and northeast, and Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse in the South and south-east and Saint-Joseph-de-Rivière to the west. The municipality is located in the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park .
The former route nationale 520 (today's D520) runs through the municipality .
history
Archaeological investigations supported the assumption that the Eugles Caves in the southeast of the municipality were inhabited by the Neanderthals 60,000 to 70,000 years ago. Roman ceramic ware from the second and first centuries BC could also be found in the community. In 1888 the Carthusian monks built a hospital here.
In 1970 there was a disaster when a fire broke out in the discotheque “5–7” in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont and 146 people, mostly young people, died.
