The municipality is located in the Arrondissement of Grenoble and belongs to the canton of Tullins . The inhabitants are called Saint-Jeannais .

Saint-Jean-de-Moirans is about 23 kilometers north of Grenoble . Saint-Jean-de-Moirans is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Voiron in the north, Coublevie in the northeast, La Buisse in the east, Voreppe in the south and Moirans in the west and south.
