Fontaine is a French commune in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes in the department of Isère . The city is the administrative seat of the cantons Fontaine-Seyssinet and Fontaine-Vercors in the Arrondissement of Grenoble .
The city with 22,523 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located opposite Grenoble on the left bank of the Drac on the Vercors massif . Parts of the municipality belong to the Vercors Regional Nature Park .
The area was already settled by Homo sapiens in the Magdalenian period (between 15,000 and 13,000 BC). Traces of the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages can also be found.
