Échirolles is a French commune in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It has 36,840 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and, together with Saint-Martin-d'Hères, is one of the most important municipalities in the agglomeration of Grenoble .

geography

The urban Échirolles is located in the Drac valley immediately south of the city of Grenoble. Other neighboring communities are Brié-et-Angonnes , Champagnier , Claix , Eybens , Jarrie , Le Pont-de-Claix , Seyssins and Bresson . Échirolles is accessed through the Rocade Sud (Grenoble's southern bypass) and line A of the Grenoble tram .

Culture

There are two museums in the municipality. One is dedicated to the once important viscose industry, the other presents the life and work of the poet Géo-Charles .

Sports

The local soccer club is the Football Club d'Echirolles, which was founded in 1949.
