occupation

The film we see ourselves wonderfully is a French screwball comedy from 2006. It was directed by Antoine de Caunes , play starring Charlotte Rampling and Jean Rochefort .

action

The film begins with a review of French newspaper collages from the 1970s. The star director Louis Ruinard and the young, attractive actress Alice d'Abanville, who comes from England, are considered the dream couple in French film and make the front pages of the press. But the numerous affairs of the egocentric director led to an abrupt separation after a few years: Alice returns to her home in London without saying goodbye.

Thirty years later she made a name for herself as an actress in British theater with Shakespeare . She lives with her husband, the wealthy Lord Gaylord, in a castle outside London .

Ruinard lives alone, has only made light comedies since the separation and is now set to receive an award for his life's work as a director in London, the location of his latest film. Alice, of all people, is slated to present him with this award. But she is still very offended and uses every opportunity during the preparations to humiliate Louis with wickedness and sharp remarks. A dispute ensues and Alice initially cancels the award of the prize, only to be on stage surprisingly for everyone. With that, she steals the show from Ruinard and lets herself be celebrated on stage as the real star. The laudation ends in bitterness, scorn and ridicule.
At the post-award ceremony, Ruinard tries to get Alice's attention by complimenting the dedicated singer (played by Boy George) from the stage and spontaneously singing the song Boum! by Charles Trenet . Although he - gesticulating and singing - actually rather exposes himself to ridicule, the audience is enthusiastic. Alice cannot share this enthusiasm and gets up to leave the hall with her husband. When Louis realizes that Alice is about to leave, he collapses on stage. After opening his eyes after a short time, he sees Alice who has bent over him full of concern. However, she is deeply displeased that her husband now wants to take care of the ailing Ruinard and invites him to his castle. There they recovered surprisingly quickly and Louis befriends Paul, the grown son of Alice and Lord Gaylord. In the days that followed, he repeatedly found opportunities to cross paths with those of Alice and Paul. The more this happens, the more Alice feels that she is still drawn to Louis.

Reviews

"With the almost 62-year-old Charlotte Rampling as Alice and the soon-to-be 78-year-old Jean Rochefort, a veteran of French film, the main roles are both perfectly cast and amusing."

- Wolfgang Huebner: Star

“Well-played screwball comedy in the best tradition, the main characters of which you can see the pleasure in their work. The superbly cast supporting roles give the film additional charm. Sensual cinema with an understanding of human weaknesses that advocates an uninhibited zest for life in old age. "
