It belongs to the Arrondissement of Grenoble and the Canton of Le Sud Grésivaudan (until 2015: Canton of Saint-Marcellin ). The inhabitants are called Chavanais .

Saint-Bonnet-de-Chavagne is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye in the north, Chatte in the east and north-east, Saint-Hilaire-du-Rosier in the south and east, Saint-Lattier in the south-west and Montagne in the west and Northwest.
