The Isère forms the northern municipal boundary. Gières is surrounded by its neighboring communities Meylan in the north, Murianette in the northeast, Venon in the east, Saint-Martin-d'Uriage in the southeast, Herbeys in the south and Saint-Martin-d'Hères in the west.
Gières is connected to the Grenobles tram .

The place appears for the first time in the church records in the 11th century. The place is mentioned as Aiben at the beginning of the 12th century.
