The prairie de la Rencontre with the equestrian statue in the background

Laffrey is a French municipality with 455 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The people of Laffrey are called Fredeyards .

geography

Laffrey is about 30 kilometers south of Grenoble . The nearby lakes ( Lac Laffrey and Lac mort ) make the commune in the French Alps a popular destination for tourists.

history

Laffrey became known as the place where Napoléon Bonaparte was assigned to a royal battalion Louis XVIII. that had been dispatched to arrest him. After Napoléon had left his exile on Elba on March 1, 1815, he and his followers moved to Paris. He met the royal troops on the afternoon of March 7, shortly before Laffrey. Napoléon opposed these with the words: "Soldiers, if there is one of you who wants to kill his emperor - here I am". Then the soldiers lowered their weapons and shouted: "Long live the emperor!"

An equestrian statue of Napoléon on the prairie de la Rencontre (meadow of encounter) has been commemorating this event since 1930 .
