Saint-Pierre-de-Chérennes is a French municipality with 464 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Grenoble and the canton of Le Sud Grésivaudan (until 2015: canton of Pont-en-Royans ).

Saint-Pierre-de-Chérennes is located about 29 kilometers west-southwest of Grenoble on the Isère , which forms the western municipal boundary. The municipality belongs to the Vercors Regional Nature Park . Saint-Pierre-de-Chérennes is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Izeron in the north, Rencurel in the east, Presles in the south, Beauvoir-en-Royans in the south and southwest and Saint-Sauveur in the west.

Trivia

On December 23, 1995, a cell of the Sun Temple sect committed a suicide massacre here on a plateau, in which 16 people, including three children, were killed. 11 people (including the children) were shot and then set on fire. Eventually the two perpetrators killed themselves.
