history

In ancient times , Vizille was a fortified city called Oppidum Antiquum . It was located at the Alpine crossing over the Col du Lautaret to Grenoble , for which the Romans often had to fight with the Allobrogians . The Roman fort was called Castra Vigiliae .

In the 10th century, Vizille belonged partially to the Cluny Abbey . The town's castle was purchased by François de Bonne, duc de Lesdiguières and rebuilt after he became Lieutenant General of the Dauphiné .

On July 21, 1788, after the Journée des Tuiles (June 7th), which marked the beginning of the French Revolution in the region, the Dauphiné deputies organized the Assemblée de Vizille , at which 50 priests, 165 nobles and 276 representatives met of the Third Estate (including Jean-Joseph Mounier and Antoine Barnave ) met. A memorial was erected in 1888 to commemorate this event.

Vizille is on the Route Napoléon (see Charles Angélique François Huchet de La Bédoyère ).
