Chamrousse is a French municipality with 422 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located around 15 kilometers southeast of Grenoble (as the crow flies) in the Belledonne Mountains and is known as a winter sports resort .

The municipality is in two cantons and consists of the three localities Bachat-Bouloud, Roche-Béranger and Le Recoin. Chamrousse has 92 km of ski slopes, 37 km of cross-country ski trails, 13 ski lifts, 10 chair lifts and a cable car as well as a snow park, a half pipe and two via ferrata.

The name Chamrousse first appeared on a map by Jacques Cassini in 1744 . On a deed of donation from 1260 the name "Culmen Rupha" was noted. In 1878, mountaineer Henri Duhamel became the first French person to ski on the slopes of Le Recoin. In 1911 the Club Alpin Français built a ski hut.

The development into a winter sports resort began in the 1950s with the construction of two connecting roads and a cable car. In 1968 the alpine ski races of the X Olympic Winter Games took place in Chamrousse . The municipality of Chamrousse was created in 1989 by separating areas from the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Martin-d'Uriage , Séchilienne and Vaulnaveys-le-Haut .
