The Giraffe AMB ( A gile M ulti- B eam) air reconnaissance radar is a representative of a whole family of short and medium range stationary and mobile air defense systems from the Swedish company Ericsson , which uses a pulse Doppler air reconnaissance radar in G-band with a C³I control center ( C³I: Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence) combined.

features

The Giraffe AMB is a true 3D radar specially developed for target assignment for short and medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems and is equipped with an active phased array antenna . The name AMB stands for Agile Multi Beam and means, for example, a rapidly moving beam sequence, i.e. several differently shaped and directed antenna diagrams can be transmitted or received in quick succession.

The antenna generates a broader transmission beam that covers all altitude angle ranges. During the reception time, the phased array antenna then forms several narrow reception diagrams for simultaneous reception of several elevation angle areas with differentiated range. With a data update rate of around one second, even extremely high-flying targets are recorded. All target coordinates are calculated with the monopulse method and thus generate a digital target signal with great accuracy. The side lobes of the antenna are reduced to a minimum, giving the Giraffe AMB a high level of resistance to active interference. While the radar transmits with a pulse power of 25 kW in normal operation, in LPI operating mode a maximum of 3 watts is transmitted in order to prevent or at least delay detection by enemy radar warning systems.

The Giraffe AMB was specially developed for the Swedish air defense system RBS 23 BAMSE and, thanks to its standardized C³I interfaces, can be integrated into almost all air defense missile systems. More than 450 giraffe radars have been delivered since 1978 and have since been in use in 18 countries outside Sweden.
