Pulse power

In the case of technical data for radar devices , the pulse power is usually given, as this is used in the radar equation . However, this power is only generated for a very short period of time, namely only during the transmission pulse with the pulse width PW. The term duty cycle is used for this in books on radar equipment, which are often in English . Duty cycle is the product of the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) and the pulse length PW and thus also the ratio of the transmission time to the pulse repetition time (English: Pulse Repetition Time PRT ).

With the following proportion can in each case between pulse power and average power (English: average ) may be converted:

Ratio of pulse power to continuous wave power
P ave = average power
P peak = pulse power
PRF = pulse repetition frequency
PRT = pulse repetition time

In order to be able to actually measure the pulse power, measuring devices are often used which can only measure an average power due to their relatively frequency-independent mode of operation (thermal evaluation of the power). The pulse power must then be calculated from the average power and the known pulse duty factor .

Due to the capacitive storage in the modulator, the power supply system for the transmitter only has to provide a little more than the average power.
