The inhabitants are called Rivièrois (es) .

Saint-Joseph-de-Rivière is located around 20 kilometers north-north-west of Grenoble in the plain of the Chartreuse Mountains . Saint-Joseph-de-Rivière is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Miribel-les-Échelles in the north, Saint-Laurent-du-Pont in the east, Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse in the south-east, and La Sure-en-Chartreuse in the south and south-west , Saint-Étienne-de-Crossey in the west and Saint-Aupre in the north-west. The municipality is located in the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park .
The former route nationale 520 (today's D520) runs through the municipality .
