Barraux is a French commune with 1,886 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Grenoble and the canton of Haut-Grésivaudan .
geography
Barraux is a municipality in the Grésivaudan valley . The town center is 3 km from Pontcharra , 22 km from Chambéry and 35 km from Grenoble . Neighboring municipalities are: Sainte-Marie-du-Mont , La Buissière , La Flachère , Pontcharra and Chapareillan . The districts of Barraux are in addition to the town center, La Cuiller, Beauregard, La Frette, Le Fayet (with the Château Le Fayet) and La Gache. The municipality is partly in the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park .
history
The Fort Barraux in 1598 of Lesdiguières the Duke of Savoy taken, who had built the fortress in the previous year. In 1692 Vauban ordered construction work to further strengthen the border with Savoy . The work lasted until 1770. In 1793 the fort was converted into a prison. From 1914 to 1918 there was a prisoner-of-war camp for German officers in Barraux, from 1941 an internment camp for Jews and Resistance fighters, which was continued after the war as a camp for black market traders and existed until 1948.
