Marie Touchet (* 1549 in Orléans , † March 28, 1638 in Paris ) was Dame de Belleville and a mistress of the French King Charles IX.

Life

1569, in the midst of a civil war and after years in which the French court complained about the lack of interest in the wives of its King Charles IX. Had wondered, he met the bourgeois Marie Touchet, daughter of a judge, in Orléans, and fell head over heels in love with her. He was to remain loyal to her until his death in 1574. From her name he formed the anagram “Je charme tout” (German: “I bewitch everything / all”) and took her to Paris that same year, where she found a place as a lady- in- waiting in the entourage of his sister Marguerite . Marie Touchet was a Huguenot , but everything indicates that she never got involved in politics, in fact, it is very unlikely that she ever influenced the young king in his attitude towards the Huguenots. Nevertheless, her presence had a positive effect on Karl: he was always calm and balanced when she was around him, and she was the only one who could calm him down if he once again suffered one of his dreaded tantrums.

In 1570 Charles IX married. the Austrian princess Elisabeth and Marie Touchet felt abandoned. When she met the new queen, however, she is said to have said: “The German doesn't scare me” (French: “L'Allemande ne me fait pas peur” ). Karl actually returned to her, although he also loved his wife tenderly. The relationship resulted in two children:

After the death of Charles IX. in 1574 Marie Touchet married François de Balzac , seigneurEntragues , in 1578 , with whom she had two daughters:
