Since the end of the Middle Ages, it was not uncommon for the kings of France , who were forced to enter into politically motivated marriages, to maintain one or more mistresses . Louis XIV even went so far as to secretly marry one of them, Madame de Maintenon . The women at the monarch's side did not always have the title of “royal mistress”.
