Charlotte-Marguerite de Montmorency
Charlotte Marguerite de Montmorency (born May 11, 1594 - December 2, 1650 in Châtillon-sur-Loire ) was Princess of Condé and mistress of the French King Henry IV by marriage .
Life
Charlotte-Marguerite was a daughter of Duke Henri I de Montmorency and his second wife Louise de Budos and the older sister of Duke Henri II de Montmorency . Through her grandfather Anne de Montmorency , who, as a close friend of King Francis I , had initiated the family's social rise, she was one of the most influential families in France.
In the spring of 1609, Charlotte Marguerite came to the French court and became lady-in-waiting to Queen Maria de 'Medici . The king took a liking to the young Charlotte-Marguerite, she was considered the most beautiful woman of her time. In order to win her over, he let her engagement to the Marshal François de Bassompierre break off and ordered his nephew, Henri II. De Bourbon, prince de Condé , the son of Henri I de Bourbon, prince de Condé and his second wife Charlotte de la Trémoille to marry her. He was known for his male friendships at court, but both unexpectedly fell in love. The liaison with the king did not last long because Charlotte's husband sent her to Brussels and then had to flee the king's wrath himself. After the king was stabbed to death by François Ravaillac in Paris on May 14, 1610 , both were able to return to the French court. From the marriage of Charlotte-Marguerite to Henri II. De Condé, three children emerged who played an important role in the Fronde :
- Anne Geneviève (1619–1679), ⚭ 1642 Henri II. D'Orleans , Duke of Longueville ( House Orléans-Longueville )
- Louis II (1621–1686), called Le Grand Condé , ⚭ 1641 Claire-Clémence de Maillé-Brézé (1628–1694), niece of Cardinal Richelieu
- Armand (1629–1666), ⚭ 1654 Anna Maria Martinozzi (1637–1672), niece of Cardinal Marzarin
