Henri I. de Montmorency (born June 15, 1534 in Chantilly , † April 2, 1614 in La Grange-des-Prés ), Duke of Montmorency and Count of Damville , was Marshal and Connétable of France .

Life

Henri was the son of the pair, marshal and connétables of France Anne de Montmorency and the Madeleine of Savoy, daughter of Renés, le Grand Bastard de Savoie , illegitimate son of Philip II "Senza Terra" of Savoy.

Henri had been governor of Languedoc since 1563 , which he ruled like a sovereign prince. He became the third Duke of Montmorency in 1579 after the death of his older brother François . As leader of the so-called "politicians" he played an important role in the French wars of religion. He was a loyal follower of Henry IV and became a Connétable of France in 1593.

Henri married Antoinette de La Marck (1542–1591), daughter of Duke Robert IV of Bouillon , with whom he had the following children in 1558 :

  • Hercule († 1593), Count of Offémont, Governor of Languedoc

His second wife was Louise de Budos (1575–1598) in 1593 , with whom he had two children:

  • Charlotte-Marguerite (* 1594; † 1650), Dame de Chantilly, Duchess of Montmorency, ⚭ May 17, 1609 Henri II. De Bourbon , Prince of Condé
  • Henri II (* 1595; † 1632), Duke Montmorency, ⚭ 1) September 10, 1608 Jeanne Scépeaux, Countess of Chemillé, 2) 1612 Maria Felizia Orsini (1599–1666), daughter of Virginios, Duke of Bracciano

His third marriage to Laurence de Clermont (1571-1654) from the House of Clermont-Tonnerre remained childless.
