Fleurette de Nérac

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fleurette de Nérac († August 25, 1592 in Nérac ) was a mistress of the French King Henry IV.

Life

Fleurette was the daughter of the royal landscaper at Nérac Castle and passionately in love with Henry of Navarre. The affair lasted from 1571 to 1572. A legend reported that the later King Henry IV arranged a rendezvous with her one evening and Fleurette waited in vain for him all night. Full of hopelessness, she threw herself into the waters of the Baïse and drowned in the process. Her statue still stands in the Park de la Garenne today, and some like to see the origin of the French expression “conter fleurette” here, from which the English “ flirt ” is said to have originated.
