Jane Stuart
Lady Jane Stewart , called La Belle Ecossaise (* 1502 in Scotland , † 1563 in Paris ) was the governess of the Scottish Queen Maria Stuart and mistress of the French King Henry II.
Life
Jane Stewart was the illegitimate daughter of King James IV of Scotland and his mistress Agnes Stewart, daughter of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan . In 1537 she married Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming ( House of Fleming ), who died in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on September 10, 1547. From this marriage she had two daughters:
- Margaret (* before 1542–1584)
- ⚭ 1548 Robert Graham, Lord Graham
- ⚭ 1549 Thomas Erskine, Master of Erskine
- ⚭ 1557 John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl
- Mary (* 1542) ⚭ William Maitland
Lady Jane was appointed governess of the little Scottish Queen Maria Stuart and her daughter Mary of the same age by the queen widow Marie de Lothringen-Guise . In 1548 she accompanied the young queen to France and won the favor of the then French king. Through the affair with Henry II, she gave birth to a son:
- Henri bâtard d'Angoulême , dit Chevalier d'Angoulême and later Governor of Provence (1551–1586).
