House Fleming

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fleming House is a family of Scottish nobility. As the name suggests, they came from Flanders , the first mention of a family "Fleming" comes from the time around 1087 with Archibald de Flanders of Bratton and Rainer le Fleming († around 1086), who was the son of Hugues d'Oisy and Son-in-law of Geoffroi de Rumigny is seen, although a relationship between these two people is not clear and is probably even unlikely.

The descendants of Sir Robert Fleming of Cumbernauld († before 1314) received the title of Earl of Wigtown in Galloway for the first time in the Peerage of Scotland in 1341 , but sold the county to Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas in 1372 . A second award of the title took place in 1606, this lapsed in 1747 with the death of the 7th Earl.

Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming (* 1547) was Lord Chamberlain of Scotland , as was his son John Fleming. 5. Lord Fleming († 1572). Malcolm Fleming was also the husband of Jane Stuart († 1563), illegitimate daughter of the Scottish King James IV , who, as a widow, became the mistress of the French King Henry II .
