Peerage of Scotland
The Peerage of Scotland includes all peer dignities that were created in the Kingdom of Scotland before the Act of Union 1707 . That year the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of England were replaced by the Peerage of Great Britain . The old Scottish peers elected sixteen members of the House of Lords after the union , only the Peerage Act 1963 gave a seat to all Scottish peers, which was changed again by the House of Lords Act 1999 .
The ranks of the Scottish peerage are Duke , Marquess , Earl , Viscount and Lord of Parliament , but not Baron . For many Scottish titles, inheritance in the female line is possible if there are no male heirs. The eldest daughter has priority so that the abeyance, which is possible in England , cannot occur here.
Scottish Viscounts were the only Viscounts to have an of in their title, which was mostly discarded. Exception: the Viscount of Arbuthnott and the Viscount of Oxfuird.
Scottish barons are not peers, just owners of feudal baronies that they can buy and sell.
The following table of still existing Scottish peers lists higher or equivalent titles in other peerages. In addition, if a Scottish peer holds a lower title in the Peerage of England, the Peerage of Great Britain or the Peerage of the United Kingdom based in the House of Lords , this is also listed. If the Scottish Peerage has more than one title, only the highest ranking will be listed.
