The title was first created on July 8, 1790 in the Peerage of Great Britain for MP Archibald Douglas . He was a son of Sir John Stewart, 3rd Baronet, and his wife Lady Jane Douglas, sister of Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas , and had inherited his family seat Castlemains near Douglas in South Lanarkshire from this uncle and adopted his family name. The title expired on the death of his younger son, the 4th Baron, in 1587.

On June 11, 1875, the title was recreated in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for Cospatrick Home, 11th Earl of Home . He was the son-in-law of the eldest daughter of the 1st Baron's first award and already held the title of Earl of Home and subordinate titles. His son, who later became the 12th Earl and 2nd Baron, added his family name to "Douglas Home" in 1877 when he inherited Castlemains when his mother died .
