Earl of Home
Earl of Home [ hjuːm ] is a hereditary British noble title of the Peerage of Scotland .
The respective earl is the hereditary chief of the Clan Home and general heir to the House of Douglas .
The historical ancestral seat of the Earls was Hume Castle in Roxburghshire . Today's Earls residences are The Hirsel near Coldstream in Berwickshire and Castlemains near Douglas in South Lanarkshire .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on March 4, 1605 for Alexander Home, 6th Lord Home .
Along with the earliest dignity, he was given the title of Lord Dunglass . In addition, he had already been awarded the title of Lord Home in 1578, which had been awarded to his ancestor Alexander Home on August 2, 1473 . Both titles belong to the Peerage of Scotland and have since been subordinate titles to the respective earl.
The 11th Earl was married to a granddaughter of Archibald Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas , whose title Baron Douglas , of Douglas in the County of Lanark , had expired in 1857. He was awarded this barony in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on June 11, 1875 . In contrast to his Scottish titles, this title was then associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . His son, who later became the 12th Earl, took on the surname "Douglas-Home" in 1877 when his mother died.
The Heir Apparent of the incumbent Earl bears the courtesy title of Lord Dunglass .
