Coldstream (Scottish: An t-Alltan Fuar ) is a free city ( Burgh ) in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders with 1946 inhabitants. It is located in Berwickshire on the north bank of the River Tweed . The river forms the border with England .
The city is known as the home of the Coldstream Guards British Army Regiment, founded in 1650 and still in existence today, and also as the place where Edward I of England invaded Scotland in 1296 .
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Coldstream was a popular place for secret marriages because of its good transport links, similar to Gretna Green . Notable buildings in town include the Customs House, where marriages took place, and The Hirsel .
Since 1990 exists between Coldstream and Bennecourt in France , a city partnership .
