Coldstream Bridge

The Coldstream Bridge is a road bridge that spans the Scottish-English border. It is near the Scottish town of Coldstream in the Council Area Scottish Borders and near the town of Cornhill-on-Tweed in Northumberland, England . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Together with the adjacent Marriage House , the bridge also forms a category A monument ensemble. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2012. In the English monument lists, however, the Coldstream Bridge is classified as a Category II * structure.

history

Haddington- born engineer Robert Reid submitted the earliest design for a bridge on site in 1762. John Smeaton submitted a draft for the same call for tenders . He later delivered a new design that combined elements of Reid's idea with his own. Construction according to this plan began in July 1763. After more than three years of construction, the viaduct was opened on October 28, 1766. The total cost was £ 6,000. They amortized by levying a bridge toll.

To reduce pier erosion, a weir was added a few meters downstream in 1785 . In 1922, as part of a restoration, the pillars were reinforced and the parapets rebuilt. After redesigning in 1928, the structure was finally reinforced again from 1960 to 1961 and the roadway widened. The separate pedestrian walkways on both sides were also created in this phase.

In 1926, a plaque was placed in the western parapet to commemorate the use of the bridge by Robert Burns in 1787.

description

The Coldstream Bridge leads the A698 ( Hawick - Berwick-upon-Tweed ) with a total length of 173 m over the Tweed . The masonry viaduct spans the Scottish-English border river with seven brick-lined segment arches with keystones . The bridge has a symmetrical structure, wherein the sheets outwardly successively smaller internal diameters exhibit. The central arch has a clear width of 20.9 m, while the following arches were constructed in pairs with widths of 18.4 m and 17.7 m respectively. The outermost arches are significantly smaller flood arches on the banks. The symmetrical design has the advantage of reusability of the falsework . Pointed icebreakers emerge from the pillars . The gussets are decorated with lined blind oculi .
