Dean Baquet
Dean Baquet (born September 21, 1956 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American journalist and editor-in-chief of the New York Times since May 2014 . He is the first African American in this position.
Life
Baquet studied at Columbia University in New York City from 1974 to 1978 . He worked as a reporter for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and then for The Chicago Tribune . From 1990 to 2000 and again since 2007 he has worked as a journalist for the New York Times. In the meantime he worked for the Los Angeles Times . Baquet has been editor-in-chief of the New York Times since May 2014, succeeding Jill Abramson .
Baquet sits on the board of the organization Committee to Protect Journalists . He has also been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2006 .
