Lord Kinloss
Lord Kinloss is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
Award
The title was created on February 2, 1602 for the Scottish lawyer Edward Bruce . The title can also be inherited in the feminine line. On July 8, 1604, he was also awarded the title of Lord Bruce of Kinloss , and on May 3, 1608 again the title of Lord Bruce of Kinloss , this time with the addition that this title can also be inherited in the female line.
His younger son, the 3rd Lord, was raised on June 21, 1633 in the Peerage of Scotland to Earl of Elgin and Lord Bruce of Kinloss , and on July 30, 1641 in the Peerage of England to Baron Bruce of Whorlton . His son, the 2nd Earl, was raised on March 18, 1664 in the Peerage of England to Earl of Ailesbury , Viscount Bruce of Ampthill and Baron Bruce of Skelton .
The 4th Earl of Elgin was elevated to Baron Bruce of Tottenham on April 17, 1746 in the Peerage of Great Britain . On his death in 1747 the titles Earl of Ailesbury, Viscount Bruce of Ampthill and Baron Bruce of Skelton lapsed. The remaining titles fell to three different lineages. The titles Lords Bruce of Kinloss and Earl of Elgin inherited Charles Bruce, 9th Earl of Kincardine . The title Baron Bruce of Skelton fell according to a special note at the award of his nephew, the Hon. Thomas Brudenell , the fourth son of George Brudenell, 3rd Earl of Cardigan . The status of the title Lord Kinloss was unclear. In 1868 the Committee for Privileges and Conduct of the House of Lords finally decided that the title had been granted to James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos , the son of Lady Mary Bruce, daughter of the 4th Earl of Elgin, and confirmed his descendant Richard Temple -Grenville, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos as 10th Lord. Today his great-great-granddaughter Teresa Freeman-Grenville holds the title as the 13th Lady Kinloss.
