Edward Bruce, 1st Lord Kinloss , 1st Baron Bruce of Kinloss (* 1548 / 1549 ; † 14. January 1611 ) was an English jurist Scottish descent. From 1603 to 1611 he held the office of Master of the Rolls .

family

Bruce was born as the second son of Sir Edward Bruce of Blairhall and his wife Alison Reid. His maternal uncle was Robert Reid , Bishop of Orkney from 1541 to 1558 and founder of the University of Edinburgh . His younger brother was the engineer George Bruce of Carnock . Before 1586 he married Magdalena Clark, daughter of Alexander Clark. With her he had three sons and two daughters. His youngest son, Thomas , was named Earl of Elgin in 1633 . After his death, his wife remarried.

Education and legal activity

Bruce received his education at the University of St Andrews , where he graduated in 1568 and received a Master of Arts degree in 1571 . Initially he worked as a lawyer. By 1583 it had established itself to the extent that the crown became aware of it. That year he was appointed Judge in Edinburgh and one of the Deputies to the Lord President of the Court of Session , the highest judge in Scotland. On December 2, 1597, he assumed the position of judge at the Court of Session , the highest civil court in Scotland.

Activity for the crown

Under James VI. Bruce took on numerous, sometimes very delicate, assignments from the Scottish Crown. In 1587 he was charged with the mediation of a dispute between Parliament and the Church of Scotland . In 1594, 1598 and 1601 he was a member of a Scottish delegation who traveled to England to bring various concerns of the Scottish king to court. In preparation for the takeover of power by James VI. in England he sent Bruce to London in 1601 . In 1602 King James made him Lord Kinloss . After the death of Elizabeth I in 1603, Bruce accompanied the new king to England. There he was granted English citizenship and continued to work for the crown until his death. After his death on January 14, 1611, he was buried in the Rolls Chapel .
