Lord Napier , of Merchistoun , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The respective lord is the hereditary chief of the Clan Napier .

Awards

The title was bestowed on Sir Archibald Napier, 1st Baronet , on May 4, 1627 . As Lordship of Parliament , in the absence of male heirs, the title can also be inherited in the female line. He had already been awarded the title Baronet , of Merchistoun in the County of Midlothian, on March 2, 1627 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia . At the death of the 3rd Lord, the Baronetcy fell to a different line of the family than the Lordship.

His descendant, the 10th Lord, was British Governor of Madras from 1866 to 1872 . On the occasion of his resignation from this office he was awarded the title Baron Ettrick , of Ettrick in the County of Selkirk , in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on July 16, 1872 . The two titles have been linked ever since.

The current title holder is Francis Napier as 15th Lord and 6th Baron.
