Baron Napier of Magdãla , in Abyssinia and of Caryngton in the County Palatine of Chester , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was bestowed on July 17, 1868, to the colonial officer Sir Robert Cornelis Napier . He had already distinguished himself in several colonial wars, became Commander in Chief of the British Ethiopia Expedition of 1868 and had defeated Emperor Theodor II of Ethiopia on April 13, 1868 in the Battle of Magdala . The territorial dedication of the title relates to this victory. Napier later became Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army and Governor of Gibraltar . In 1882 he was promoted to field marshal .

Today's title holder has been his great-grandson Robert Alan Napier as the 6th Baron since 1987 .
