The title was created on June 20, 1628 for Sir Donald Mackay, 1st Baronet . This had already been raised on March 28, 1627 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia to Baronet , of Far.

At the death of the 9th lord in 1875 the line of descendants of the eldest son of the 2nd lord was extinguished and the title fell to a distant relative of the descendants of the second son of the 2nd lord, namely Æneas Mackay van Ophemert as 10th Lord Reay. Already in 1854 he had inherited the Dutch title of Baron Mackay van Ophemert en Zennewijnen from his father , which was awarded to him on June 4, 1822.

His son, the 11th Lord, was raised to Baron Reay , of Durness in the County of Sutherland on October 8, 1881 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . At that time a seat in the British House of Lords was associated with the title . Since the 11th lord remained childless, this title expired on his death in 1921. The lord title fell to his cousin, the 12th lord. From 1963 to 1999 , the title of Lord also directly entitled him to a seat in the British House of Lords.

Today's title holder is Aeneas Mackay as the 15th Lord.
