Duke of Roxburghe
Duke of Roxburghe is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , named after the town and castle of Roxburgh in Scotland .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was bestowed on April 25, 1707 in recognition of his services in bringing about the Act of Union 1707 to John Ker, 5th Earl of Roxburghe , along with the subordinate titles of Marquess of Bowmont and Cessfurd , Earl of Kelso and Viscount of Broxmouth . It was the last Dukedom to be awarded in the Peerage of Scotland.
His great-great-grandfather Robert Ker had already been awarded the title Lord Roxburghe in 1600 and the titles Earl of Roxburghe and Lord Ker of Cessford and Cavertoun in 1616 , all in the Peerage of Scotland. The 1st Duke inherited this title in 1696 and used it from 1707 as a subordinate title to the Dukedom.
The 6th Duke was awarded the title Earl Innes on August 11, 1837 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The eldest son of the respective title holder carries the courtesy title Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford as his heir apparent .
Since it was acquired by Robert Ker, 1st Earl of Roxburghe in 1600, Floors Castle near Kelso in Scotland has been the ancestral home of the family to this day.
Other titles
The later 2nd Duke had been awarded the titles Earl Ker , of Wakefield in the County of York and Baron Ker , of Wakefield in the County of York in 1722 in the Peerage of Great Britain . These expired when the 3rd Duke died in 1804.
The later 4th Duke had inherited the title 7th Lord Bellenden , of Broughton, created in 1661 in the Peerage of Scotland in 1797 . However, this expired on his death in 1805.
