Johann Wilhelm Kretschmann (* 1702 ; † 1758 ) was the district doctor of the provincial governorate of Hof , mayor of the city of Hof and the Upper Prince-Brandenburg Bergrat. He became known as the author of the standard work collection on a mountain historia of the Margraviate Brandenburg-Bayreuth from 1741.

Johann Wilhelm Kretschmann was the son of a pharmacist. He grew up on the stilt yard . With the option of being able to take over the father's pharmacy, he helped in his father's business and acquired further knowledge in Salomon's pharmacy in Leipzig. After attending the Hof high school , he studied pharmacy in Leipzig and medicine in Erfurt . After his studies he practiced as a doctor in Hof and in 1729 became district doctor for the provincial governorate of Hof. In the summer of 1731 he became a councilor and immediately afterwards mayor. As a family coat of arms, he carried a waxing crescent moon , the helmet ornament consisted of a bearded man with a hooded cap, who held the now lying moon of the coat of arms in his outstretched open hand.

Due to his knowledge of the local, partly abandoned mines and local minerals, which were expressed in an extensive ore mineral collection, Margrave Friedrich III appointed him . 1737 to the Hochfürstlich-Brandenburgischen Bergrat in Bayreuth . He held this office until 1740.

The collection was published as early as 1741 for a mountain historia of the Margraviate Brandenburg-Bayreuth . Knowledge about mining in the region is recorded on 3240 pages. It contains numerous copies of old documents beginning in the 16th century. The work was reprinted in 1992 by Hans Vießmann in a small edition in a practical format. The editors were Dieter Arzberger, Helmut Heinrich and Friedrich Wilhelm Singer . The original in three pigskin volumes is in the Bamberg State Archives .
