profile

Former Franciscan summer house , now the music hall of the Jean-Paul-Gymnasium

A special feature is that from the fifth grade onwards, Latin or English can be chosen as the first foreign language. In the sixth grade, the other language is added as a second foreign language. In the musical branch, Latin and English remain the only foreign languages, in the modern language branch French is the third foreign language from the eighth grade onwards, in the humanistic branch it is ancient Greek. In the tenth grade, the first or second foreign language in all branches can be replaced by the late-beginning foreign language Spanish.

In the musical branch there is a strong cooperation with the Hof Symphony Orchestra . In instrumental lessons, the students have a large choice of musical instruments that can be learned. Some concerts are held jointly. In the linguistic branch, a musical and dance class is offered in cooperation with the Hof Symphony Orchestra and the Hof Theater in the fifth and sixth grades.

Since the number of pupils per class is an average of 21 pupils, more intensive support is possible than in classes with more pupils. In addition, during the breaks, the pupils have the opportunity to borrow play equipment or to use the table tennis table in the school yard.

Rides

In the 10th grade, students travel to Berlin for a week each year and in the 11th grade to London . In the Greek subject, in the 10th / 11th Class travel to Greece every two years. Every year French students also have the opportunity to take part in an exchange with the French Lycée in Vesoul .

School activities (selection)

There are three ensembles for further musical development: the big band, the orchestra, the lower school choir and the large choir. Together with the Hof Symphony Orchestra, they organize several concerts every year, such as the Advent concert or the summer concert. Furthermore, the students can get involved in the musical, which always gives a great performance at the end of the year, as well as in the school newspaper or in the theater group in cooperation with the Theater Hof .

Open all-day school

The grammar school offers students in grades 5–8 the opportunity to attend the open all-day school free of charge. During this time, the students are supervised by professionals and they are helped with their homework. You can also take part in sports or artistic activities during this time.

principal

Since the Jean-Paul-Gymnasium has been the seat of the ministerial representative for the grammar schools in Upper Franconia, the school has been run by the ministerial representative. The permanent deputy of the ministerial representative performs the duties of the headmaster. Stefan Klein has been in this position since September 2018.

Library

The original "Bibliothec zu der Schulen zum Hof" was set up in 1591 and contained 131 works. Under the rector Longolius in the 18th century, books were donated to the grammar school through an appeal for donations, in some cases larger book collections. The library now holds 40,000 works, including 2,797 titles printed before the 18th century. It is planned to make the library accessible to the public, especially scientists, in the near future.

history

The grammar school is one of the oldest schools in German-speaking countries . It emerged from the Hofer Gymnasium Albertinum, which was founded in 1546 by Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach and is connected to the Hof monastery , which was dissolved as a result of the Reformation . The library, established in 1591, has many rare works from before the 18th century. Various rectors and schoolmasters have developed lively publishing activities. In the time of the Reformation they were committed to the introduction of Protestantism in the city and through theological studies they were also in church offices, e.g. B. as pastor or superintendent , active. They have distinguished themselves several times by researching and documenting the history of the city of Hof:

The artist Max Escher , who also attended school as a student, worked here as an art teacher.
