Johann Christoph White

Johann Christoph Weiß (* 1663 in Naila ; † April 3, 1725 in Hof ) was a Protestant theologian and rector of the Hof high school .

Johann Christoph Weiß himself attended high school in Hof and continued his theological studies in Leipzig and later in Wittenberg. Back in Hof he took over the pastor's office in Selb and later held clerical offices in the city itself. He rose to the school in 1687 to become vice rector and then in 1691 to rector, succeeding Johann Christoph Layritz . He earned merit through writings on the history of the school and the history of the church in Hof. He tried u. a. to continue the plan of his predecessor Layritz to create a city chronicle. However, the work remained unfinished with 338 printed pages. In 1695, Weiss switched to church service.

Weiß was married to Katharina, a daughter of the Hofer citizen and butcher Adam Hagen. The marriage had twelve children, several of which did not survive childhood. He introduced his eldest son of the same name as a preacher in the Lorenz Church . His youngest son Johann Nikolaus became a professor in Altdorf .

After narrowly escaping a conflagration in the Schmidt factory in 1722, he died in 1725. He was solemnly buried in a crypt near the Lorenz Church , carried by twelve country clergymen . In Hof, Johann-Weiß-Strasse was named in his honor.
