action

The plot shown in the film consists of four interlinked episodes, most of which are portrayed with a time lag.

Bolz escapes from his parents' house. Together with Jolly, who is piling up from the boarding school, he drives to Graz, where they spend the day with Jolly's clique. Jolly, Bolz and Jolly's friend Elli are finally picked up by the police late at night. When the police want to give Jolly to his mother, but she does not let him into the house, Bolz threatens the police with a gun, the three of them pile up again.

Jolly's mother Gabi decides to leave her son at the boarding school on the weekend to have more time for herself. She goes out with a friend and meets her boss Helmut. Gabi and Helmut spend the night in Gabi's house after going to the disco until the police interrupt them to deliver Jolly. After Gabi has sent her away, she regrets her decision and goes to the police station. On the way back she is hit by a car.

Karin Bolz, the mother of (Klaus) Bolz, suffers from her violent husband. Her son comes home late in the evening. After Klaus uses a knife to force her to give him his savings account, he runs away again. The next day Karin visits her seriously ill mother in the hospital, who dies during the day. Not knowing where to go, Karin spends the night in the hospital.

Jolly rushes to the hospital with Bolz and Elli, where the doctors inform him and his father of Gabi's critical condition. Bolz meets his mother in the hospital, but decides not to accompany her home, but to wait for Jolly.

The prostitute Lara meets Frank when Jolly's clique makes fun of his helplessness. She offers him her help, the two finally spend the day together and go on a trip into nature. Late at night they drive back to Graz in a drunk state.

background

Erwa came up with the idea for this film while talking to a young person on a train ride. The casting of the three young leading actors then took place in the summer of 2005, followed by rehearsals for the first episode.

In order to achieve the greatest possible authenticity, the script only acted as a “staging basis”; Erwa worked out the characters, their relationships and dialogues together with the actors, and improvisation also played an important role during the shoot. Heile Welt was the first professional film experience for the three young leading actors ; the remaining roles were cast partly with professional actors, partly with amateur actors.

Many scenes were shot with the handheld camera , Erwa relied on long focal lengths and blurring. While the episode about Jolly, Bolz and Elli is noticeable by its restless camera work, Erwa chose a quieter camera work for the episodes about the adult characters, but also used the handheld camera for them.

The film was shot as a 35 mm film with Dolby SR and premiered on January 17, 2007 at the Oldenburg Film Festival. The first episode was previously shown as a short film on the Diagonale. The production companies were Novotny & Novotny and mojo: pictures .

criticism

Björn Eichstädt described the first episode of Heile Welt for the film magazine Manifest as a “documentary and digitally shaky Austria version of Village of the Damned or Who Can Kill a Child? ". In the further course, however, other aspects also become apparent, Heile Welt draws “the dreary reality of the parents […] gloomy next to the life of the children, shifts pieces of the narrative inside and next to each other and shows that horror can only grow where it has sown [ sic ] became “. Erwa has “captured wonderfully” that “ binge drinking finds its cause in parental life”. Erwa “ties in with his compatriots Michael Haneke and Ulrich Seidl and still goes his own way”.

Matthias Greuling wrote for Die Furche that Erwa's full-length debut, who is still part of the youth he shows in the film, is characterized by “primarily authentic immediacy”. "The immediacy of his cinema, the spontaneity of the director with the Rasta braids" is reflected in Heile Welt , but unfortunately "in the montage" Erwa falls for "the potpourri of sources of inspiration"

Harald Ladstätter ( filmtipps.at ) describes Erwa's “semi-documentary feature film debut” as “more than an honorable test of talent”, comparing it with Larry Clark is “not too exaggerated”. Furthermore: “Shot on digital video with a minimal budget, technical inadequacies and minor staging defects cannot be denied. Fortunately, the weaknesses are kept within tolerable limits. ”While Eichstädt wrote in his criticism for the manifesto that the episode about the prostitute Lara shows“ that there are alternatives even at the bottom ”, Ladstätter criticizes this part of the film: the“ force and emotional density of the film ”is“ dampened by terribly flat dialogues ”.

The Austrian Youth Media Commission gave the film the positive label “recommended as a discussion film for ages 14+”.
