Jakob Moritz Erwa (born July 17, 1981 in Graz , Styria ) is an Austrian film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

After graduating from the HTBLVA Ortweinschule Graz for art and design in June 2000, Erwa worked for various film production companies in Austria. At the age of nineteen he also wrote his first screenplay, One by One - a teenage tragedy . In 2001 he made his first short film Trübe Aussichten and began studying at the Munich Film School , which he graduated in February 2007.

In 2003, Erwa founded the young film production company mojo: pictures together with actress Rachel Honegger in Munich , under whose name some material by young filmmakers has already been realized. In 2007 Erwa realized his award-winning graduation film Heile Welt (film) together with Novotny & Novotny Filmproduktion . The film received the Großer Diagonale Prize for the best Austrian feature film in 2006/07 and the German Independence Award at the Oldenburg Film Festival for the best German film. The film was also shown in competition at numerous international festivals. From 2007 to 2009 Erwa developed Tschuschen: power , a youth series about second and third generation migrants in Vienna for ORF . Erwa was invited to the 2015 Berlinale with his second feature film HomeSick , where the film celebrated its world premiere in the “Perspective German Cinema” section. Erwa received the Bavarian Film Prize for his film adaptation of Andreas Steinhöfel's book for young people, Die Mitte der Welt , which was released in November 2016.

In addition to his films, Jakob M. Erwa is also very interested in the topics of youth and integration. He is involved in filmmaking workshops for young people with a wide variety of cultural and social backgrounds.

Jakob M. Erwa lives in Berlin and is a member of the Federal Association of Directors (BVR), the German Film Academy , the Academy of Austrian Films and the European Film Academy .
