Act
One of his best-known books is Paul Vier und die Schröders (1992), which is now standard reading in German schools. The film adaptation of the book won the German Children's Film Award in 1995 . His novel Die Mitte der Welt , which was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize in 1999, is particularly popular with young people , as is the quasi-continuation Defender - Stories from the Middle of the World .
His translations include books by Jerry Spinelli , Roddy Doyle , Lois Lowry , Paul Shipton and Kate Walker as well as the new translations of the two best-known works by Susan E. Hinton , - The Outsider and Rumble Fish .
As a screenwriter, Andreas Steinhöfel u. a. About 40 episodes of the Käpt'n Blaubär Club (1993/1994 for WDR / ARD) and five episodes of the children's series Urmel aus dem Eis (1994 for WDR / ARD), several episodes of the children's TV series Löwenzahn (2008-2010 for ZDF) and the TV music series Adventure Classic! (2007 for the WDR). He also wrote the script for the KiKA series Dschermeni, which started in 2017, together with Klaus Döring .
In 2009 he was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in the children's book category for his book Rico, Oskar and the Tieferschatten . The film version of the same name started in German cinemas on July 10, 2014. The sequels Rico, Oskar und das Herzgebreche and Rico, Oskar und der Diebstahlstein were also filmed.
Steinhöfel said about the character "Rico":
“I always wanted to create a character that speaks to many children from the soul. "Rico" is the best litter I've had so far. I thought it was going to be a special children's book, but I get avalanches in the mail from all types of schools, and every time it says: Finally someone feels and thinks like me. Rico is allowed to make mistakes, Rico pats from one fat bowl to the next and also jumps around in it. It doesn't have to be perfect. I recently had a reading where I said to the students: Don't be told that your intelligence or your human existence can be measured in grades. And those of you who are now in the deep valley of tears with your fives and sixes, believe me: you can be classified as losers by others, but the only thing you are not allowed to do is no longer believe in yourself .
