Rico, Oskar und die Tieferschatten is a German children's film that was directed by Neele Vollmar and premiered in German cinemas on July 10, 2014. The film is based on the book of the same name by Andreas Steinhöfel , published by Carlsen Verlag in 2008 , which was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 2009 .

action

Ten year old Rico, who describes himself as “gifted”, lives alone with his mother at Dieffenbachstraße 93 in Berlin-Kreuzberg . One day when he met Oskar, who was two years his junior, he quickly realized that this boy was very different from him. Oskar knows a lot for his age and can quickly combine. He is considered highly talented, but unfortunately he is constantly afraid of the big and small dangers of everyday life. Despite these differences, the two boys become friends. Meanwhile, a child kidnapper is up to mischief in Berlin. He is called “Mister 2000” because he demands a ransom of 2000 euros for his victims. Oskar decides to uncover this scoundrel on his own without Rico noticing.

And then all of a sudden Oskar disappeared and Rico is at a loss. However, he concludes that Mister 2000 must have abducted Oskar because Rico found a pin that came from a former victim and that only Oskar could have left behind as a clue. So he sets out on the kidnapper's trail, which initially leads him to Berlin-Schöneberg . He meets with the girl who owned the pin and finally realizes that Oskar is being held captive in the secret annex of "Dieffe 93". The “deep shadows” that Rico could always observe there came from the kidnapper and the kidnapped children. Rico quickly frees Oskar, but the kidnapper is already on their heels. It is Mr. Marrak, who also lives at Dieffe 93. After a wild escape and an awkward scuffle, Mr. Marrak is hit in the head by a falling flowerpot. Grouchy Herr Fitzke wanted his peace and quiet and threw him down.

Mister 2000 is exposed and the children are celebrated as heroes. Rico only finds out about this when he wakes up in the hospital. He had passed out while fighting with Mr Marrakech.

The shooting of Rico, Oskar and the Tieferschatten began on September 3, 2013 and took place in Berlin and Leipzig until October 26, 2013 .

Differences from the book

  • The Kiesling doesn't drive a Porsche, but a Mercedes.
  • The scene with the unfriendly ice cream seller actually belongs to the second book. In the first part, Rico and Oskar only plan to have an ice cream, but that doesn't happen because Oskar is kidnapped.
  • Even before meeting Oskar, Rico's mother tells that she has to go to Stuttgart because of her brother's cancer. In the book, that happens afterwards. Here she also wants Rico to come with her, but after he defends himself because he doesn't want to miss his goals with Oskar, she leaves him there. In the book, since Rico is disappointed that Oskar didn't come anyway, she wants to drive alone, Rico is just disappointed that the bingo evening is canceled.

reception

The film was given the rating of "particularly valuable" by the German Film and Media Assessment . The reasoning states that Vollmar has succeeded in creating a contemporary film for children: "Without any kitsch or pointing fingers, Vollmar takes children's problems and conflicts seriously without placing them too much in the foreground." In the film, Rico throws them in addition, questions that other children and adults would not even ask themselves, which means that the film is “not just superficial”. The jury also rated the cinematic implementation of the deep shadows as successful, as well as the performance of the main actors and the adult ensemble in the supporting roles.

continuation

In 2015 a sequel was produced under the title Rico, Oskar und das Herzgebreche . Another sequel was released on April 28, 2016 under the title Rico, Oskar and the theft stone .
