The Vision Kino gGmbH ( spelling VISION KINO ) is an initiative founded in 2005 by public and private institutions for film and media education in schools.

The purpose of the business is to strengthen the film skills of children and young people in particular as part of cultural youth education and within the framework of overarching media skills, while at the same time making them aware of the cultural location and original reception location of film, the cinema.

The company was brought into being through an initiative of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media , the Film Funding Agency , the Deutsche Kinemathek Foundation and the “Kino macht Schule” GbR. Vision Kino is under the patronage of the Federal President .

Leopold Grün has been Managing Director since January 16, 2020 . The documentary filmmaker and educator took over from Sarah Duve in early 2020 .

This also includes the annual School Cinema Weeks, which take place at different times in all 16 German federal states . School classes can visit selected films in local cinemas, which are prepared and followed up in class. Further training courses for participating teachers take place in advance. The cinema weeks, which have been held in individual federal states since 2002, have been continued since 2006 under the coordination of Vision Kino and since 2008 all 16 German federal states have taken part. Around 690,000 schoolchildren took part in the autumn 2011 / spring 2012 project period.

In cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the kinofenster.de website, pedagogical material for use in the classroom is made available for current cinema films.

The company regularly publishes educational film materials and booklets. Monthly film tips with age recommendations inform teachers in good time about cinema releases that are relevant for school and extracurricular film education.

Every two years the company initiates a nationwide congress as a platform for the exchange of all actors involved in school and extracurricular film education.

Together with the children's channel of ARD and ZDF , Vision Kino annually awards the Kindertiger screenplay award for the best screenplay of a children's film. A children's jury will decide on the winner.
