action

After Max's parents separated and he is now alone with his mother and sister Kiki, he simply can no longer believe in Santa Claus and is not really looking forward to the festival this year. That changes when, in the middle of a winter night, a Santa Claus moose falls through the roof of Max's parents' house. After this crash landing, the moose has to convince the boy that Santa Claus really exists, because only with Max's help can he and Santa Claus get back together.

First of all, Max provides the elk, who can talk and is called Moose, with food. Since the boy has nothing else, he makes him peanut butter sandwiches and when the animal also wants some hay, Max tries to get him this delicacy from neighbor Panneman. But the man doesn't like children and chases him off his property. After his annoying and precocious sister discovers Moose, she helps Max Pannemann to persuade them to give them ten bales of hay. Pannemann has long been hoping for Max's mother and hoping that his generosity could make an impression on her and tries to invite her to dinner in return. After some hesitation, she accepts his invitation, but basically finds the man just disgusting.

Max spends a lot of time with Moose over the next few days and they talk to each other about their worries. While Max is mad at his father because he left the family for another woman, Moose heartily wishes to be able to pull the real Christmas sleigh with the presents himself and not only be responsible for the test drives. After Moose is fit enough to go for a walk again, he helps Max when two boys from school want to beat him up. For the first time, Max now has a real friend who stands up for him. Max can also return the favor soon, because Pannemann has discovered the elk and would love to own it as a hunting trophy. With Max's help they can hide from the hobby hunter and escape. Back at home, Max is amazed when Santa Claus himself is sitting on the sofa. On the way to find his elk, Max met Max's grandmother, who was on her way to see them. His intuition had advised him to speak to her and ask if she would take him a piece in her car. Now that Moose's boss is here, that means for Max to say goodbye again. But fatally, Moose has lost his stardust, without which the two of them would not come back to the North Pole and Christmas would be canceled this year. However, Max observed how Pannemann had found the tin can and when Santa Claus tried to get the stardust back, he was arrested by the police. Since he firmly claims to be Santa Claus, he is taken to the psychiatry without further ado. Max is determined to get the stardust from Pannemann together with Moose. While the moose lures Pannemann out of the house and distracts him, Max can get the metal can. To escape, they have to sprinkle Pannemann with some stardust. Then they fly to the clinic, free Santa Claus and fly away with him.

Now it's time for Max to say goodbye to Moose. But he is still connected to his walkie-talkie with Moose, who this year is actually allowed to pull the Christmas sleigh himself on Christmas Eve .

reception

The film received the distinction " Valuable" from the German film and media rating : "All the characters in this family film are well cast in their characters. Even if the dramaturgy, in the opinion of some jury members, has some lengths in the arc of tension, various humorous insertions, such as the somewhat whimsical Santa Claus, loosen up the action in a pretty and highly entertaining way. Of course, IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER NIGHT is not a very realistic story, but the film is still a nice Christmas tale for children who have not yet given up their belief in Santa Claus. "

Kino.de evaluates: "The Christmas moose hits somewhere in Holland, knocks stupid sayings like a participant in a [...] stoner comedy, and brings turbulence in previously peaceful family existences in this fairy tale film, which is moderately successful in finding the right tone for small to medium-sized children Netherlands. A conditionally credible, but reliably trigger-happy neighbor and the somewhat wrecked-looking Santa Claus create criminal suspense. "
