Ludger Stühlmeyer (2005)

Ludger Stühlmeyer (born October 3, 1961 in Melle ) is a German cantor , musicologist , lecturer and composer . Since 1994 he has been the city and deanery cantor of the Archdiocese of Bamberg in the city of Hof and the Upper Franconia region .

Life

Stühlmeyer comes from a family of musicians and gained musical experience at an early age in the Catholic town church of St. Matthew in Melle. His first music lessons he received from the pianist and composer music director Karl-Heinz Schäfer and church music director Karl-Heinz Höne the Conservatory in Osnabrück . After graduating from high school in Melle , he studied church music ( Wolfgang Helbich , Winfried Schlepphorst ), early music ( Manfred Cordes ), organ ( Harald Vogel ) and singing (Wolfgang Büssenschütt, Elke Holzmann) at the University of the Arts in Bremen .

He studied composition with Helge Jung , Günther Kretzschmar and Karlheinz Stockhausen . He took Gregorian semiology with Luigi Agustoni , Godehard Joppich and Johannes Berchmans Göschl . Stühlmeyer received a scholarship from the Study Foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück .

He studied musicology ( Axel Beer , Klaus Hortschansky , Winfried Schlepphorst), philosophy ( Fernando Inciarte , Berthold Wald ) and theology ( Arnold Angenendt , Klemens Richter ) at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . With the dissertation topic Curia sonans Stühlmeyer was in Munster for a doctor of philosophy in 2010 his doctorate . The study was supported by the Friedrich-Baur-Stiftung ( Burgkunstadt ), the Oberfrankenstiftung ( Bayreuth ) and Wolfgang Seal Foundation funded (yard).

From May 1980 to September 1988 he was cantor in the diocese of Osnabrück and from October 1988 to October 1994 pastoral care area cantor in the diocese of Münster . Since November 1994 Stühlmeyer has been city cantor in Hof and deanery church musician for Upper Franconia as well as lecturer and employee of the office for church music in the Archdiocese of Bamberg. He is a member of the Max Baumann Society , the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society and the International Valentin Rathgeber Society .

Ludger Stühlmeyer is married to the musicologist and theologian Barbara Stühlmeyer and has a daughter. His brothers are the pastoral theologian and pastor Thomas Stühlmeyer and the deacon Klaus Stühlmeyer.

Act

His grandfather Henry Stühlmeyer , a "silent hero of the resistance against the Nazis ," the result of his work for the Catholic Church and persecuted by the Third Reich in 1940 in the concentration camp Emslandlager spent was 47 years at the St. Peter's Church in Gesmold was active. Ludger Stühlmeyer succeeded him in office. This went hand in hand with the management of the St. Petrus Kantorei and the concert series with organ concerts , cantatas and chamber music . During this time, the new swallow's nest organ was built (1982), integrated into the dome of the church, based on the model of the Roman pantheon .

In dialogue with Bishop Friedrich Ostermann (Münster 1991)

Ludger Stühlmeyer's work as pastoral care department cantor in eastern Münsterland ( Dean's Office Warendorf ) developed as part of a project to test this new musical professional profile in the diocese of Münster in the early 1990s. This combined a wide range of choir work with a choir consisting of children's choirs , a youth choir , a choir of young adults, a church choir , a vocal ensemble and a choral school . In addition to the music-based parish work integrated into the pastoral concept of the parish association, he initiated a monthly series of concerts and regional church music days for the eastern district of the diocese of Münster.

At the beginning of his activity in Hof he accompanied the restoration of the historic Steinmeyer organ of the St. Marien town church (1994/95) carried out by the Bonn company Orgelbau Klais . He attached particular importance to a stylish restoration of the instrument from the German-Romantic era , which is classified as a monument , of which only a few have remained original and unchanged.

In 1995 Stühlmeyer founded a series of concerts in which works by contemporary composers are regularly premiered. In dialogue with the musicologist Klaus Beckmann , he performed Dietrich Buxtehude's entire organ works in a cycle of nine evening music . The Capella Mariana chamber choir, founded by Stühlmeyer, consists of an international cast of professional musicians and ambitious amateurs. From the development of musical works from the Middle Ages to world premieres of newly composed church music, the ensemble devotes itself to the development of the entire spectrum of choral literature.

In May 2003 he took over from the then Bamberg diocesan music director and cathedral music director Werner Pees the editing of the series of publications on church music in the Archdiocese of Bamberg , which he held until July 2010. On the occasion of the EU enlargement in 2004 , he led together with the one from Cheb coming Czech by a series of concerts as part of the Czech-German cultural exchange musician Martina Kolarova. In radio and television broadcasts and transmissions, he works with broadcasters such as Deutschlandfunk , Radio Horeb , Bayerischer Rundfunk and Second German Television .

The Allgemeine Cäcilien-Verband for Germany appointed him ACV Music Director in 2013 for outstanding artistic and educational achievements . The Board of Trustees of the German Liturgical Institute and the Liturgy Commission of the German Bishops' Conference proposed Stühlmeyer in 2015 to succeed Matthias Kreuels as church music advisor . However, he did not take up the position in favor of his work in the Archdiocese of Bamberg. In May 2018, the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder described Ludger Stühlmeyer as an “outstanding ambassador for our homeland”.

Stühlmeyer composes works for singing (e.g. cantatas , songs , masses , motets , singspiele ) and instruments. His compositional technique is rooted in the endeavor to make the aspect of listening experience tangible as a communicative medium. In doing so, he pursues his goal of focusing on the essentials in the seemingly simple, opening up the expressiveness of the sound that refers to itself, with which philosophical thinking is combined as well as the ability to experience spirituality . His liturgical music is inspired by the forms of worship of the Catholic Church and the word-tone relationship of the Gregorian chant , which defines and implements the composition as the sound body of the word. In his compositional work he realizes the understanding of liturgical music anchored in the Second Vatican Council as the innermost and in the sense of the up orat qui cantat (double prayer who sings) intensified basic execution of faith.

His works are shaped by the musical avant-garde , postmodernism and personality sounds . His scenic works, designed for children, in the tradition of his teacher Günther Kretzschmar, taking up the postulates of holistic pedagogy , promote the children's ability to experience and their joy in singing and creating. In conceptual discussions with the Münster regional bishop Friedrich Ostermann , he created the basis for a renewed reception of the Gospel cantata for children in the Catholic liturgy .
